Dylan Crews is out of the lineup as he looks to settle down and get out of his funk
Major League Baseball is very hard. Dylan Crews is finding that out right now. He has started the season in an 0-15 skid with 10 strikeouts, including 8 punch outs in a row. Tonight, he will get a chance to re-set and have a mental breather.
Dylan Crews is a guy who has not struggled much in his career, so this must be a lot on him mentally. I doubt he has gone 0-15 with 10 strikeouts before in his life. You could see him pressing in the box and even in the field at times. He was also whiffing through fastballs, something he never does normally.
I think Davey Martinez made the right call giving his young right fielder the night off and going to Alex Call. Everything felt like it was going way too fast for Crews. It seemed like you blinked and Crews was down in the count 0-2.
In the second game of the season, Jesus Luzardo was dotting him up with perfect pitches, and that has mostly continued since. He isn’t getting many pitches to hit, and when he is, he is not taking advantage.
This has led to pressing and too much chasing. Right now it feels like he is taking first pitch strikes and then expanding because he is behind in the count. I think a night off will do him a world of help. His swings last night were a little bit better, with Crews just missing a home run in his second at bat.
Dylan Crews has not taken the baseball world by storm just yet, but I am willing to be patient and give him some time. However, if the day off doesn’t work and his at bats look the same over the next couple weeks, sending him down would have to be on the table. It would not be a punishment, rather a re-set.
Dylan Crews is still brimming with talent and has a bright future ahead of him. However, the first few games have not been kind for the young outfielder. Davey doesn’t want things to spiral out of control, so he is giving the youngster a mental rest.
