After last nights incident, the MLB handed out suspensions to Davey Martinez and Jorge Lopez
One of the biggest stories of last nights game was when Jorge Lopez threw a fastball high and tight to Andrew McCutchen which caused a fracas. The MLB has reacted to that and is suspending Lopez three games and manager Davey Martinez one game.
Reliever Jorge Lopez has been suspended 3 games for “intentionally throwing at Andrew McCutchen.” He’s appealing the suspension.
Manager Dave Martinez has been suspended for a game. He’ll serve that suspension today. Bench coach Miguel Cairo will manage the game.

Lopez is appealing the suspension, so he is allowed to pitch until the appeal is settled. However, managers are not allowed to appeal, so Davey will miss today’s game.
This seems like a harsh punishment to me. Lopez couldn’t find the zone at all last night. I find it hard to believe he would throw at one of the most beloved active players in a close game.
The MLB must have been looking at Lopez’s history of a short fuse and the incident last night with Paul DeJong. However, Lopez said it was not intentional and I believe him.
It will be interesting to see how Miguel Cairo manages the bullpen today. Trevor Williams does not tend to go deep into games, so the pen will need to be active today. The bullpen has been a disaster so far for the Nats, but they need to step up for once this season.
In a season where the Nationals bullpen has been the center of attention for all the wrong reasons, this incident just brought even more negative attention on the unit.
