Trey Lipscomb is going to get his chance in the Big Leagues after Paul DeJong’s scary injury
Last night, Paul DeJong suffered one of the nastier injuries I have seen in some time. He was hit in the head by a 93 MPH fastball by Mitch Keller. DeJong was gushing blood and Keller looked very shaken up. It looks like the veteran will have to go on the IL.
According to multiple reports, infielder Trey Lipscomb will be joining the team in Pittsburgh today. Lipscomb will likely be a bench piece until either CJ Abrams or DeJong return. Hopefully DeJong did not suffer any serious injuries and can return in short order.
The Nationals are now going to have a patchwork left side of the infield. Given how good Nasim Nunez has been the last couple days, he is likely to be the starting shortstop until Abrams comes back.
However, third base is going to be a rotating cast of characters. It will likely be some combination of Lipscomb, Amed Rosario, and Jose Tena. Lipscomb is the best defender of the three, but looked rough at the plate in 2024. He hit .200 with a .500 OPS in 190 at bats last year.
Amed Rosario has swung a hot bat to start the season, hitting .300 with a .790 OPS. However, he looked suspect defensively at third base last night. Jose Tena has not seen much playing time this season.
It is worth noting that they did not bring up top prospect Brady House. I think it is the right move. House still needs to refine his approach at AAA.
First, we at Federal Baseball are sending our prayers to Paul DeJong. Hopefully he can recover quickly. While he hadn’t gotten going with the bat yet, his defense over at the hot corner was exceptional this season. Also, congratulations to Trey Lipscomb on the recall.
