Nationals bring in a quality reliever, but the bullpen still needs work
GM Mike Rizzo has finally decided to bolster a weakened bullpen by signing veteran Jorge Lopez to a one-year deal. The deal is worth $3 million. After non-tendering Kyle Finnegan, and trading Robert Garcia, the bullpen was an obvious area the Nats needed to attack.
Lopez has been an effective reliever, posting sub-3 ERA’s in two of the last three seasons. He also brings closing experience, saving 23 games in 2022. Lopez started last season with the Mets, before being cut after an explosive clubhouse rant.
However, the 31 year old was fantastic after being picked up by the Cubs. He posted a 2.03 ERA, and saw his K/9 jump from 6.5 with the Mets to 10.5 with the Cubs. Armed with a heavy sinker, Lopez is also a ground ball specialist, with a 51.4 GB% last season.
Lopez figures to be in the mix for some closing opportunities. However, the Nationals still need to do more to upgrade the bullpen. They need at least one more proven big league option to fill out what has become a thin bullpen. Lopez is a step in the right direction, especially if he is at his best.
Amos Willingham was designated for assignment to make room for Lopez on the 40 man roster.
