Orioles manager Brandon Hyde ejected in 9th inning vs. Padres over slide into Gunnar Henderson

July 28, 2024 by The Baltimore Sun

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde was ejected during the ninth inning of their 8-6 win over the San Diego Padres after an interference call on the field was overturned by replay review.

Padres pinch runner Tyler Wade slid into Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson to prevent a would-be game-ending double play. The slide knocked Henderson to the dirt, prompting half the Orioles’ dugout, including Hyde, to spill onto the field.

Wade executed a pop-up slide and took a step off the bag after completing it, prompting the umpiring crew to convene on the infield and determine whether it was an illegal play. If Wade did slide past the bag, then he could be called for interference on Henderson. The crew ruled that it was an illegal slide and signaled that Jurickson Profar was out at first, ending the game.

Padres manager Bob Melvin immediately came out to challenge the call and MLB’s replay review overturned it, ruling that Profar was safe to keep San Diego’s hopes of a comeback alive. Hyde then went back over to the umpires by the first base line to make his voice heard and crew chief Alan Porter threw him out of the game. He said after the game that the umpires didn’t give him an explanation for why the call was overturned.

“I thought it was a clean slide,” Hyde said. “He just went over the base, and that’s what they called right away because he went over the base. I just wanted to know why they overturned that.”

The call was a pivotal one at that point of the game, allowing a run to score and bringing Jake Cronenworth to the plate representing the winning run. Baltimore held on as Yennier Cano, looking for the save in place of close Craig Kimbrel, induced a groundout by Cronenworth to end the game.

The ejection was Hyde’s 16th of his six-year managerial career, third this season and first since July 12, when he was tossed following a benches-clearing incident with the New York Yankees.
