There were three wins on the farm and a number of good pitching performances
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 3, Charlotte Knights (CWS) 2
Starting pitcher Brandon Young had an excellent start. He pitched 5.1 innings without allowing a hit. He walked one batter and struck out eight. It doesn’t get much better than that. In 11.1 innings this season, Young has yet to allow an earned run.
The Knights scored both of their runs in the eighth inning against Luis González on a two-run homer. He also walked two batters in his 1.2 innings.
On offense, the Tides scored three runs in the first two innings. Coby Mayo doubled in the first run, then came in to score on an infield single from Jud Fabian. In the second inning, Luis Vázquez walked, stole second, and scored on a single by the recently demoted Dylan Carlson.
It was a good day for Carlson, who had two hits and a walk. He did get thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double. Vimael Machín and Emmanuel Rivera also had two-hit games. Mayo reached base twice with his double and a walk.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 2, Altoona Curve (PIT) 0
Zach Fruit made his season debut with 4.2 scoreless innings. He allowed his fair share of baserunners, though, with three hits and three walks. He struck out four and threw 70 pitches. Peter Van Loon followed with three hitless innings.
It was a scoreless game until the eighth inning on doubles from Frederick Bencosme and Carter Young, and a single by Anthony Servideo. The Baysox had four of their seven hits in the eighth. Enrique Bradfield also singled in the inning.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 3, Hub City Spartanburgers (TEX) 1
Michael Forret started the game with 4.2 scoreless innings and Blake Money finished with four innings of one-run ball. Each pitcher allowed two hits. Forret walked two and struck out five. Money walked one and struck out four while picking up the win.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Ethan Anderson and Aron Estrada singled, then Jake Cunningham walked. Anderson stole home on the walk, which sounds like a Little League play. They added two more runs in the eighth on a double from Cunningham that knocked in Estrada and Griff O’Ferrall.
Anderson and Estrada both had two-hit games, with Estrada picking up a walk. Vance Honeycutt went 0-for-2 with a walk.
Low-A: Salem Red Sox 4, Delmarva Shorebirds 2
A loss! The affiliates were so close to a clean sweep of wins.
Starting pitcher Eccel Correa allowed two runs in 4.1 innings. Simon Leandro allowed four hits and two runs in one inning. And Carter Rustad had a nice debut with four strikeouts across 1.2 innings.
The Shorebirds had seven hits but managed just two runs, one each in the sixth and ninth innings. In the sixth, the Shorebirds loaded the bases on two walks and a single, then Yasmil Bucce took a bases-loaded walk to drive in the first run. In the ninth, Bucce walked again and came in to score on a single from Fernando Peguero.
Alfredo Velásquez and Steven Ondina had two hits each, while Miguel Rodríguez along with Bucce had two walks.
