None of the affiliates won, although there were several nice performances up and down the farm.
Triple-A: Charlotte Knights (CWS) 9, Norfolk Tides 8
The Tides managed to squander a 6-0 lead thanks to an unsteady outing from starter Kyle Brnovich (4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) and a pair of bad relief outings. Brnovich allowed a fair amount of traffic on the bases over the first two innings, then a two-run homer in the fifth. The relievers’ outings were mixed, as well: Roansy Contreras allowed a two-run HR, and Corbin Martin let in three runs on a walk and three hits, including a two-run triple. Nick Richmond faced three batters and hit one, walked another, and struck out a third. Kade Strowd pitched a strong seventh inning.
It was a strong day for the offense, though, which put up 11 hits. Three singles, a walk and a wild pitch brought in three runs in the first inning. Three more runs scored in the second, all on the long ball: Jud Fabian (Orioles #12 prospect) hit a two-run homer and Vimael Machín clubbed one of his own. The Tides would add two more runs in the sixth inning on a pair of doubles by Dylan Beavers (#6) and Coby Mayo (#2), and an RBI single for the hot-hitting Machín.
Fabian and Machín each had two hits and finished with five total bases. Machín is OPS’ing 1.107 right now, and continues to look like an interesting signing. Dylan Carlson (1.623 OPS) walked as a pinch-hitter.
Double-A: Altoona Curve (PIT) 2, Chesapeake Baysox 1
This was a tightly pitched game, with just three runs and nine hits between both teams. Altoona scored two runs on a two-run home run in the third off Trace Bright, which was enough to win. The Baysox scratched together one run in the seventh inning on a HBP, fielder’s choice and a Hudson Haskin RBI groundout.
Trace Bright took the loss with two earned runs in three innings (three hits, three walks). Behind Bright, however, three Chesapeake pitchers combined for five scoreless innings: Preston Johnson (seventh round, 2022), Yaqui Rivera, and Edgar Portes, none allowing more than a hit each. Chesapeake pitchers also racked up nine strikeouts and kept the walks to a minimum (four).
It was a tough one for the hitters, with only three hits and four walks total. Enrique Bradfield Jr. (Orioles #3 prospect) doubled, and Tavian Josenberger and Adam Retzbach each hit a single. Former second-round pick Jeremiah Jackson, Max Wagner, Douglas Hodo and Anthony Servideo reached on free passes.
High-A: Hub City Spartanburgers (TEX) 7, Aberdeen IronBirds 5
The IronBirds had a 3-1 lead after one inning, but Ty Weatherly’s four-run outing (on six hits and three walks) set them in a hole they couldn’t climb out of. Opener Juan Rojas allowed one run (unearned) on a double steal and also struck out three.
Still, five IronBirds pitchers racked up an impressive 13 K’s on the day. Hayden Nierman pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings. Teddy Sharkey took the loss with two earned runs in the seventh, while native Baltimorean Dominic Freeberger closed out the game with a stupendous 1.2 hitless innings in which he struck out four.
The IronBirds scored three in the first inning on an RBI triple by shortstop Griff O’Ferrall (O’s #7 prospect) and a two-run single by DH Thomas Sosa. They’d add two more in the sixth on an RBI groundout and home run by right fielder Jake Cunningham.
Vance Honeycutt (#4 prospect) finished 2-for-4, while Anderson, O’Ferrall, Sosa, Cunningham and Austin Overn had a hit apiece.
Low-A: Salem Red Sox 6, Delmarva Shorebirds 5
Delmarva dropped its third in a row to the Salem Red Sox, dragged down by poor starting pitching. Keeler Morfe, 18, had a dreadful day, managing to walk five batters and not get out of the first inning. He allowed three runs and had to be relieved by Trent Turzenski, who covered 1.1 innings with just one run allowed (unearned). Sebastian Gongora (11th-round-pick, 2024) threw 2.1 innings and allowed two runs and Jacob Cravey (6th-round pick, 2023) threw a nice 3.2 scoreless with two hits allowed and five K’s.
The Shorebirds were down in a 4-0 hole after two innings, but the hitters kept it interesting at least. In the fifth inning, Miguel Rodríguez and Maikol Hernández each walked with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to two. They scored their third run on a single, double and error, then two more in the late innings on a 2-RBI double by Rodríguez.
Edrei Campos reached base three times on a pair of singles and a walk, and Fernando Peguero, Edwin Amparo, Kevin Guerrero and Steven Ondina had a hit apiece.
