With a blockbuster trade in the league yesterday involving Jewell Loyd and Kelsey Plum, you never know.
Yesterday, we wrote that the Washington Mystics decided not to core Elena Delle Donne, allowing her to enter unrestricted free agency. This allows Delle Donne to explore her options and gives her the best chance of going to another team. We didn’t discuss about the possibility of her getting traded to another team. But we know that in last year’s WNBA trade market, the Mystics couldn’t trade her as the centerpiece of a trade when she is paid a supermax contract.
Yesterday, the Seattle Storm, Los Angeles Sparks and Las Vegas Aces were involved in a major three-way trade that sent Loyd to the Aces, Plum to the Sparks and the No. 2 pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft to the Storm.
That trade sparked a question I have.
Is it possible the Mystics could sign and trade Delle Donne after all? And by extension, could she be packaged with veterans like Ariel Atkins or Brittney Sykes and/or the No. 4 and No. 6 picks in the 2025 WNBA Draft for another rising star player in the WNBA?
Or maybe a higher pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft?
It is an open secret that the Mystics plan on rebuilding, or as many of us say on this site, deconstructing. While rebuilding often involves a lot of losing, it would be a good idea to see if the Mystics can try to make a move to get another young player (right now, the only young player they realistically will keep is Aaliyah Edwards) whom they can realistically build around in 2026.
