LeBron James: never woke up after I brushed my teeth like, ‘Yeah, this is my league. I’m the face of the league. Goddamn it — shine’s up! I’ma shine something up!’ But I did know there was a responsibility put on me — to carry the league in a certain fashion. You gotta think: before I entered the league, and right after MJ retired — after he came back the second or third time — yeah, he came back and was done with Washington… There was a big fan-player separation in our league. People just weren’t resonating with a lot of the players. A lot of the guys didn’t really care — or whatever the case may be. And I felt like… in order for me to make a name for myself — obviously, I knew the play was going to take care of itself, because I knew how much I committed to it — But I also wanted to handle the responsibility of showing the face of the league… in the sense of being a modern citizen. You know — being a role model.”

LeBron has posted a screenshot of himself ranked as a top 100 Madden player. Is he really world-class in the game? I asked one of his opponents.

More on this storyline
LeBron James: Giannis Antetokounmpo would have 250 points in a game in the ’70s. Two-fifty! Kyrie Irving? They would have called him a witch. No, seriously — they would’ve called him a witch. They would’ve told Kyrie, ‘You’re not allowed to dribble anymore.’ That’s what they would have told him. Dribbling is outlawed. You know how they used to tell Lew Alcindor — Kareem — that he couldn’t dunk in high school? Same thing. They’d have seen Kyrie and said, ‘Nah, dribbling’s outruled!’ -via YouTube / March 26, 2025
LeBron James: Obviously I know I’m on the other side of the hill, not the previous side, you know? I’ve done this for a long time. And now, I know — you get to the top of that roller coaster, and it’s like: ‘Okay… when is this damn roller coaster going to go down?’ So I understand that. I don’t know, man. For real — for me, it’s all about my mind. If I can continue to — I mean, I’m all about the process. I’m all about the process. If it ever gets to the point where I don’t feel like showing up to the arena five hours in advance… Or I don’t feel like training… Or I don’t feel like studying the scout sheet of guys… If it gets to that point — I’ll know. I’ll know like, ‘You know what, Bri? It’s a wrap.’” -via YouTube / March 26, 2025
LeBron James: And MJ — we all know MJ. Even if you don’t know him personally, he’s one of the most ruthless competitors there is. And until I’m done — and he doesn’t have to look at me running up and down wearing the number 23, and every time my name is mentioned, it’s mentioned with his — Don’t talk to me right now. I’m on the back nine. Do not call me. (…) I mean, like I said — I wear 23 because of MJ. The inspiration he gave me as a kid in Akron, Ohio — where we didn’t have much inspiration in the hometown — you look at someone. It’s gotta be somebody in sports, somebody in music, somebody on the TV screen. Will Smith from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Michael Jordan playing for the Bulls, Jay-Z, Biggie, Tupac — That was my inspiration. You know what I’m saying? I needed that. -via YouTube / March 26, 2025
