The Wizards were one of the most active teams last night during the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft.
The first round of the 2024 NBA Draft is now complete. The Washington Wizards were one of the most active teams last night, making two reported trades on draft day. They aren’t official, presumably until early July after free agency signings can be announced.
Anyway, let’s get to the picks, and the trades.
Who did the Wizards pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft?
The Wizards have the No. 2 and No. 26 selections. They were:
- No. 2: Alex Sarr, Perth Wildcats
- No. 26: Dillon Jones, Weber State (more on him in a second)
BUT WHAT ABOUT BUB CARRINGTON AND KYSHAWN GEORGE? DIDN’T THE WIZARDS ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGE THEM AS WIZARDS?
Read on.
What were the Wizards two trades from last night?
The Wizards made two trades. They were:
- Acquiring the rights to the Portland Trail Blazers’ No. 14 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the second best first round pick in the 2029 NBA Draft, their 2028 and 2030 second round picks, AND Malcolm Brogdon in exchange for Deni Avdija. This was the biggest trade of the night.
- Acquiring the New York Knicks’ No. 24 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft in exchange for the Wizards’ No. 26 pick (whom they selected Jones with) and the No. 51 pick in the same draft. The Knicks subsequently traded Jones to the Oklahoma City Thunder for five future second round picks.
Yes, we will post on who the Wizards select with that No. 51 overall pick, given that these trades are effectively official but aren’t final.
Which other first round picks are expected to play for the Wizards after trades are finalized?
- The Trail Blazers selected Bub Carrington (Pittsburgh) with the No. 14 overall pick for Washington.
- The Knicks selected Kyshawn George (Miami FL) with the No. 24 overall pick for Washington.
How many first round picks will the Wizards have by mid July when Summer League begins assuming all the trades are finalized?
The Wizards should have three first round picks in Monumental Red jerseys: Sarr, Carrington and George.
When is NBA Summer League?
There are three Summer League tournaments. The first two are in California (Sacramento and San Francisco) and Utah but Washington will not participate in them.
The Wizards only participate in the Vegas Summer League, which is from July 12-22. Every NBA team is in that tournament. Opponents are to be determined. This will be when Wizards fans get their first chance to see Sarr, Carrington and George represent the nation’s capital.
