The new Mystics front office members will also be reporting to Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger, which also indicate his desire to have a direct hand shaping the future of the WNBA team in D.C.
The Washington Mystics intend on naming their next General Manager and Head Coach around Jan. 1, 2025, according to Kareem Copeland of The Washington Post. The news is the most significant update since Monumental Basketball began front office interviews around the last week of November 2024.
Couple quick updates on the Mystics GM and coaching search:
Sounds like they’re down to 5-6 candidates for both spots. Timeframe is still around the 1st of the year. In-market interviews expected to start within a week. Still no preference for the order of the hires and both…— Kareem Copeland (@kareemcopeland) December 6, 2024
Per Copeland, the Mystics are down to about 5-6 candidates for both the GM and Head Coach positions which will be in different bodies. In addition, it is possible that the Head Coach is named before the General Manager. And at any rate, both people will report to Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger in the interim. That appears to be unique for WNBA teams, because in general, the General Manager is the one who hires the head coach.
Then again, it’s possible that the GM in this case is the one executing moves, while Winger takes a look at how the players are doing under the head coach.
