The Wizards head coach is happy with his team after leading Washington to their first 5-1 start since the 2005-06 season.
The Washington Wizards are 5-1 to start the 2021-22 NBA season, something that hasn’t happened since the 2005-06 season when head coach Wes Unseld, Jr. was in his first year as an assistant in Washington. Even Unseld wasn’t aware of that fact during postgame media availability last night.
Another point: Unseld wasn’t aware that he was an assistant last time the Wizards were 5-1!

Staying on the topic of hot starts, it’s more often than not that we see the Wizards race off to an 0-5 start instead, even when they make the playoffs. Cases in point? 2007-08 and last season in 2020-21.
Yesterday’s double overtime win against the Celtics required everyone to be in a celebratory mood, including the head coach himself. During media conferences, he is cool, collected and analytical.
But before Unseld spoke to the media, he still had to speak to his players … and it took some time between the end of the game and the start of his postgame session, though I didn’t exactly keep track.
In his postgame speech to the Wizards yesterday, which you can see above, Unseld was still cool, collected and analytical, pointing out that the Celtics did go up by 6 points to start overtime before the Wizards countered to extend it to a second extra period. But he was noticeably peppier this time, which I like to see after a win such as this.
After Unseld’s speech, Bradley Beal had some words and the team finished by saying “Family.”
It’s very early in the regular season, but the Wizards are definitely looking like a thriving D.C. Family already. (Can we get that #DCFamily hashtag back already, Monumental?)
