After over a decade in Providence, coach Ed Cooley decided that it was time for a change. He now takes over the struggling Georgetown Hoyas, but it reportedly wasn’t for the money.
Per basketball insider Jeff Goodman:
“Ed Cooley did NOT leave Georgetown for the money. Sure, he is making more with the Hoyas. But the average is about $5 million per year, per source. 7 years at about $35 million at Georgetown, per source. Providence was paying somewhere around 4.5 mil per year.”
Just an FYI: Ed Cooley did NOT leave Georgetown for the money. Sure, he is making more with the Hoyas. But the average is about $5 million per year, per source.

Cooley’s hire marks a significant upgrade for the Hoyas who went 13-50 over the past two seasons under legendary alum Patrick Ewing.
In a statement on the hire, Georgetown president John J. DeGioia said he believes Cooley’s arrival will but the historic Big East program back in position to “thrive.”
Ed is a proven leader and an experienced coach, whose values and knowledge of the game will lead our program into this new chapter. His commitment to excellence on and off the court will bring out the best of our basketball program and will give each member of our team the experiences and support they need to thrive.
In his 12 years with the Friars, Cooley led them to the NCAA Tournament seven times and had them off to a 14-3 start this season before the wheels fell off a bit towards the end.
