Every March for many years until their final show there in 2014, The Allman Brothers Band would play several weeks of shows at the Beacon Theatre on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
The dates often overlapped with the Big East Tournament, so it was possible, in a given week, to see a couple of Allmans shows and several nights of college basketball without leaving the West Side of Manhattan.
This was my routine for many years, with many friends, across dozens and dozens of shows.
One night stands out in particular. I was on the left side of the floor, a few rows off of Gregg Allman’s Hammond B3 organ, and Warren Haynes was doing a soulful cover of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.” The good vibes were flowing, the crowd was one with the music and everyone was having a good time. I know I was.
