The college basketball community lost a legend this week. Former Maryland coach Lefty Driesell has passed away at 92 years old.
Driesell became a college basketball coach in 1960. He led Davidson to a 176-65 record before taking his talents to Maryland.
While at Maryland for 17 seasons, Driesell owned a 348-159 record. He led the Terrapins to the Sweet 16 many times during that stretch.
Tom McMillen, who played for the Hall of Famer back at Maryland, was first to announce that Driesell has passed away.
“I am deeply saddened to share that Coach Lefty Driesell passed away this morning,” McMillen said. “He was a legend both on and off the court and instrumental in my life. I am grateful that we shared some time together a couple weeks ago. We will miss him dearly.”
Driesell also had success at James Madison (159-111 record) and Georgia State (103-59 record). He’s the first coach in college basketball history to win more than 100 games at four different schools.
When Driesell retired, he was the fourth-winningest men’s basketball coach in NCAA history. His résumé included a plethora of awards, such as ACC Coach of the Year and CAA Coach of the Year.
Our thoughts are with the Driesell family at this time.
