The Terps look for their fourth consecutive midweek victory.
Maryland baseball hosts in-state rival UMBC Tuesday, as it looks to recover from another weekend series loss.
The Terps dropped the first two games of the series against Northwestern, but won a high-scoring affair, 22-11, Sunday to end the series on a high note.
With the Terps sporting a 14-14 overall and 3-6 Big Ten record through three conference series, there is little room for error as they take on UMBC.
Tuesday’s game will begin at 4 p.m. and stream on Big Ten Plus.
UMBC Retrievers (8-13, 2-4 America East)
2024 record: 27-25, 14-10 America East
Head coach Liam Bowen is in his sixth season leading UMBC and 14th with the program after serving as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for eight years. During his tenure, the program has experienced its most consistent success, winning more America East games than any other team in the conference over the past two seasons.
Bowen has proven his ability to develop players, with 17 Retrievers advancing to professional baseball. He has also coached five freshman All-Americans, three America East Pitcher of the Year selections and three America East Rookie of the Year winners.
Hitters to watch
Anthony Masculli, freshman infielder, No. 14 — Masculli’s first action came on March 4th against George Washington. Since then, he has led the team with a .375 batting average and .969 OPS, while also recording the third-most hits on the team this season (18).
Jesiah Carpenter, sophomore outfielder, No. 3 — Carpenter started just 10 games last season, but has started every game for the Retrievers in 2025. Among hitters who have played at least 75% of the games this season, he leads the team with a .276 batting average, totaling 21 hits and runs.
Leewood Molessa, redshirt sophomore infielder, No. 44 — After winning America East Rookie of the Year in 2023, Molessa’s 2024 season was cut short after six games due to a season-ending injury. In 2025, he is batting .262 and leads the team with five home runs and 18 RBIs.
Pitchers to watch
Zach Robinson, sophomore right-hander, No. 10 — Robinson started in the Retrievers’ midweek contest against Coppin State on March 18. He pitched just three innings and could be in line to start again Tuesday.
Ayden Gonzalez, sophomore right-hander, No. 37 — Gonzalez has made nine appearances out of the bullpen this season, totaling 10 innings pitched. He leads the team with a 2.70 ERA.
Nick Remy, senior right-hander, No. 23 — Remy has made nine appearances out of the bullpen, amounting to a 3-0 record with a 3.52 ERA over 15.1 innings pitched.
Strength
Bullpen. Many of the Retrievers’ best arms come out of the bullpen, with five pitchers under a 4.50 ERA.
Weakness
Starting pitching. UMBC hasn’t found any consistency in its starting pitching. Multiple players have started and made bullpen appearances, while those who have assumed purely starter roles each boast ERAs above 8.7.
Three things to know
1. Midweek success. Maryland has played well in its midweek matchups, boasting a 4-2 record and winning the past three.
2. Who will start? Brayden Ryan started last Tuesday against George Mason, but only recorded two outs. The Terps will look for a consistent midweek starter after moving freshman Jake Yeager to a weekend role.
3. Time to go. Head coach Matt Swope and senior Alex Calarco both mentioned after Sunday’s win that there is little room for error because of the team’s lackluster start. A win Tuesday is crucial in building momentum.
