The junior averaged 3.4 points this year.
Maryland basketball forward Tafara Gapare entered the transfer portal Monday, becoming the first Terp to do so. The news was first reported by Pete Nakos of On3.
Standing at 6-foot-9, Gapare averaged 3.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game in 32 appearances this season — none of which he started. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
Ranked a four-star prospect in the class of 2022, per the 247Sports’ Composite, Gapare began his collegiate career at UMass.
He then transferred to Georgia Tech and saw increased action his sophomore year, averaging 5.1 points and 3.5 rebounds in 15 starts.
Brought to College Park as a reserve forward, the New Zealand native showcased flashes of athleticism and a strong feel for the game in limited minutes this season. A high-flying, rim-running dunker with notable shot-blocking ability, Gapare also helped stretch the floor in ways fellow bench forward Jordan Geronimo could not. He connected on 13 of his 35 (37.1%) three-point attempts.
Gapare scored in double figures twice this season — posting 19 points against Bucknell and 12 against Ohio State. He finished the year shooting 47% from the field, the fourth-best mark on the team.
Despite a career-low usage percentage of 17%, Gapare posted career highs in offensive win shares (0.3), defensive win shares (0.8), block percentage (8.0) and box plus/minus (4.6).
Maryland does not currently have any transfer portal commits, but with Geronimo and Julian Reese graduating and Derik Queen expected to enter the 2025 NBA Draft, the Terps will look to bolster their frontcourt.
