Young played in all but one game this season.
Maryland men’s basketball guard Jay Young put his name in the transfer portal Monday, the second Terp to do so, Tobias Bass of The Athletic first reported.
Young played in 35 of 36 games this season, coming off the bench in all of them. He averaged 1.8 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game, but was primarily used as pesky on-ball defender to spell starting guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie of tough assignments.
He posted a season-high 12 points against Canisius on Nov. 19, his only time scoring in double figures this season. While he did not score much, Young was a relatively reliable spot-up shooter, hitting 37.5% of his 3-pointers on 28 attempts.
Young transferred to Maryland in the offseason after spending last year at Memphis, where he played in 27 of 32 games and averaged 2.2 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game.
In his six years of college basketball, Young has been with five different teams and will likely add a sixth to his résumé. He redshirted the 2019-20 season and played the next two at a community college, leaving him with one more year of eligibility.
Young was joined by Gillespie and Rodney Rice in the portal, while Tafara Gapare was the first to enter.
