This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.
Former Maryland men’s basketball star Kevin Huerter signed a four-year contract extension with the Atlanta Hawks, the team announced on Monday. The deal is worth $65 million, which equates to roughly $16 million per season.
Before the new contract, Huerter was entering the last year of his rookie contract with the Hawks. Huerter has been with Atlanta since the 2018-19 season where he’s averaged 11.2 points, 3.3 assists and one steal in 29.7 minutes per game over the course of his three years with the team.
Huerter has had back-to-back consistent seasons for the Hawks. Last season, the former Terp averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 assists and a career-high 1.2 steals per game. He helped Atlanta to the Eastern Conference Finals before the Hawks fell in six games to the eventual NBA Finals champions in the Milwaukee Bucks.
In his two seasons at Maryland, Huerter was a major contributor. He averaged nearly 15 points per game in his final season with the Terps and he played a crucial role in both of Maryland’s NCAA Tournament trips in 2016 and 2017.
