There has been a decision in the DUI case for former Texas A&M and Arizona head coach Kevin Sumlin.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, Sumlin has pleaded no contest to a lesser charge in the case stemming from an incident that took place in Florida back in October. He will now receive one year of probation on a charge of reckless driving with alcohol as a significant factor. Sumlin will also pay a $500 fine and must enroll in a DUI school for adults.
The incident which took place last fall saw Sumlin arrested at approximately 1 a.m. ET in Hillsborough County, Florida. He was reportedly parked illegally when he was spotted by police. Sumlin refused to take a breathalyzer test but was noted as having “unsteady balance” and “multiple signs of impairment.”
Sumlin currently serves as the offensive coordinator, associate head coach and tight ends coach at the University of Maryland. This incident took place during the team’s bye week this past season.
Maryland acknowledged Sumlin’s arrest in a previous statement but did not pledge any action in response.
“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin,” the Maryland athletic department said in a statement after Sumlin’s arrest. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment.”
Maryland head coach Mike Locksley similarly expressed disappointment but pledged to support Sumlin.
“It’s disappointing. You know, as coaches we have to set the example and model the behavior that we want our players [to have] and we take it very seriously,” Locksley said at the time. “At the same time, I will also say he’s part of our football family and we’re going to support Kevin.”
By the looks of things, Sumlin will be back with the Terrapins next season with no status changes.
