Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.
Boys sport Athlete of the Week: LaMont Johnson, Digital Harbor, track and field
Digital Harbor was in position to win the Class 3A state title on Thursday and Johnson made sure, running the anchor leg of the deciding 4×400-meter relay to lead the Rams past runner-up Oakland Mills by a 73-63 margin. The teams had started the final race tied. The standout junior teamed with Jevontae Williams, Jawon Blue and DeAndre Thomas in the clinching relay (3 minutes, 16.31 seconds) and the group also broke the Class 3A state record in the 4×200 with a time of 1:26.4. Johnson also set a 3A state meet record in the 400 (46.93) and took second in the 200.
Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Noel Evans, Arundel, track and field
In leading the Wildcats to the Class 3A state title on Thursday, the senior captured two individual titles and was part of two winning relays. At the end, it came down to the 4×400, and Evans teamed with Grace Hickman, Aiyana Gutrick and Bryce Hatcher to come across in a state-title clinching time of 3 minutes, 55.13 seconds to edge Oakland Mills, 75-73. Evans also won the 200 in 24.85 seconds, the 400 in 54.90 and was part of the winning 4×200 relay.
