Team of the Week
Francis Scott Key girls basketball
The Eagles established themselves as the early-season front-runner for the county championship with a convincing 52-43 win over defending champion Westminster. Summer Brooks scored 24 points and Caroline Kohr added 14 in the win.
The victory improved FSK to 7-2 and 2-0 in the county. After a season-opening loss to Walkersville, the Eagles won six straight games before a loss over the holiday break to reigning Class 3A state champion Poly. The win over the Owls was FSK’s first game returning from the break.
Honorable mentions
Century girls indoor track and field: The Knights beat out Harford Tech, 99-84, to claim first place Saturday at the Warrior Invitational, hosted by Boonsboro at Harford Community College.
Westminster boys basketball: The Owls are in first place in the county, moving to 3-0 in conference play with Friday’s 56-48 win over Francis Scott Key. They play Century, the county’s only other unbeaten team, on Tuesday.
Century wrestling: The Knights went 8-0 to win the Friar Duals over the weekend at Archbishop Curley. Chris Brooks and JT Ferguson had perfect records at the event.
5-star players
Summer Brooks, Francis Scott Key girls basketball: The senior poured in 24 points to lead the Eagles in the win over Westminster. She is averaging 17.1 points, 6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game so far this season.
Ella Lustig, Century, girls indoor track and field: Lustig was a double winner Saturday at the Warrior Invitational. The freshman won the 500 meters in 1 minute, 22.07 seconds in addition to winning the 800 in 2:29.61. She also anchored Century’s winning 4×400 relay.
Grayson Barnhill, South Carroll, wrestling: Barnhill put on a show over the weekend as South Carroll took third in their division at the prestigious Virginia Duals. Barnhill won all four of his matches by pin, totaling just 4 minutes, 3 seconds on the mat.
Charlie Mollman, Westminster, boys basketball: Mollman has been an integral piece inside for the Owls as they’re off to 3-0 start in the county. Friday against FSK, Mollman recorded a fifth straight double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds, as well as four blocks.
Jack Bruffey, Gerstell, wrestling: Bruffey won the 165-pound weight class this weekend at the Franklin Invitational. Bruffey won all three of his matches by first-round pinfall, including a victory over previously unbeaten Gavin Hill of Quince Orchard in the final. Bruffey is 16-1 this season.
