Not many Draft Day trades in recent memory have come out of absolutely nowhere the way the Marquise Brown trade last night did. That was apparently by design.
Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed that the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals actively worked to make the deal a secret all the way to the end. He said that the two sides were ready to nix the trade entirely if the move was made public before they were read.
“From my understanding if the deal got out beforehand they weren’t gonna do it,” Rapoport said. “Everyone involved kept it secret.”
The end result was a move that should please both the Ravens and the Cardinals. Arizona got a top wide receiver who will make star quarterback Kyler Murray very happy (and already has). Baltimore promptly used the pick to trade down and accumulate even more picks before selecting center Tyler Linderbaum with the 25th overall pick.
How did nobody know about the Hollywood Brown trade?

It’s pretty rare that a trade of that magnitude can completely avoid all reports or even rumors.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ trade for wide receiver A.J. Brown made more sense because it had been rumored for weeks that Brown and the Tennessee Titans were on the outs.
Perhaps it’s a testament to what a tight ship either or both teams run that they kept the deal a secret for so long.
Time will tell which of the two teams actually won the trade.
