The NFL Offseason is around the corner but there haven’t been any discussions about extending cornerback Carlton Davis as he’s a free agent this year. According to a report, general manager Brad Holmes did not give an intriguing response about Davis’ future which may spell the end of his tenure with the team. Originally selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Lions made a surprising trade midseason in hopes of bolstering their secondary unit after a trade for Davis. However, those were just dreams for now since the Lions were missing the majority of their secondary which could be a reason why the team lost to the Commanders in the divisional round matchup.
Since the Lions will focus on extending Kerby Joseph, there might be much room to give Davis a new contract. Davis suffered a season-ending injury that kept him out of action for the rest of the season’s campaign so that might be a reason for not retaining him. The former Super Bowl champion should have some type of market to potentially revive his career since he still has a lengthy resume. Davis might expect some type of raise on his next contract but that may not be possible considering he hasn’t been able to stay healthy after missing at least four games the last few seasons.
“No Discussions” Lions Impending Free Agent Carlton Davis Might Not Return – Ravens, Chiefs Logical Fits
Salvaging the Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens can’t afford another season in the Fall to lose in a big-time game like they did against the Bills. While the Ravens’ offense was stellar despite their wide receiver issue, the defense has yet to be on the same page. However, they found a way to keep the team together like glue but it wasn’t enough to bring the trophy home. Marlon Humphrey is one of the best secondary pieces they have on their entire roster but other names like Brandon Stephens and Kyle Hamilton haven’t lived up to expectations.
Rookie Nate Wiggins is still a developmental cornerback so he needs some veteran assistance coming into next season. Ar’Darius Washington has done a phenomenal job of helping the secondary since his elevation but it’s never a bad thing to bring in some extra cornerback help. As the secondary gets younger, the Ravens should sign a couple of veterans this free agency to get this team to finally win a championship ring.
Embracing the Cheap Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs will have to scrap for some extra dollars for off-season moves since the salary cap is working against their favor. Trent McDuffie is one of the best cornerbacks in the league but he’s going to need assistance if the Chiefs want to see huge progression from him. The Chiefs had to embrace signing Steven Nelson for depth but Justin Reid might leave, they should add another superstar to bolster this unit. Chamarri Conner got hurt this past season so they can’t afford that to happen again.
Perhaps they could sign Carlton Davis and form a raging fire duo with McDuffie.
