New York City prosecutors have charged Maryland native Luigi Mangione with murder in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to filings in New York Criminal Court.
Mangione, a graduate of Baltimore’s Gilman School, faces a total of five counts, as of Monday’s online court filing, including second-degree murder and gun charges.
No defense attorney was listed for Mangione and the case has not been assigned as judge as of Monday.
Thompson was gunned down on Dec. 4 on a sidewalk in New York City. The early morning shooting was caught on surveillance video. Police chasing a suspect released numerous videos of a man who was a person of interest.
On Monday, a person matching the description was spotted in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Authorities arrested the individual on gun charges and identified him as 26-year-old Mangione.
Police speaking with Mangione said he began shaking when asked if he had been in New York recently, court papers say. They also said he was carrying a gun believed to be the one used to shoot Thompson.
Mangione was arraigned Monday evening and ordered held without bail after brief court appearance in Pennsylvania.
The court filing in New York City did not specify the next appearance date for Mangione.
