Dan Quinn’s first three seasons as the Atlanta Falcons head coach went about as well as anyone could want. The Falcons went 8-8 in Quinn’s first season (2015) after Atlanta won six games in 2014.
Over the next two years, Quinn led the Falcons to 11 and 10 wins, losing once in the NFC divisional round and to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI after blowing a 28-3 lead. Unfortunately, things went downhill for Quinn over the next three years, and he was fired in 2020.
Quinn wasn’t out of work long. He signed with the Cowboys as the defensive coordinator and led Dallas to top-five defensive finishes over the last three seasons. Earlier this year, he earned another opportunity to become a head coach with the Washington Commanders.
Quinn inherits a 4-13 team, but he and general manager Adam Peters did plenty of work on Washington’s roster, including drafting quarterback Jayden Daniels at No. 2 overall. Can Quinn turn the Commanders around much as DeMeco Ryans did with the Texans in 2023 (also with a rookie quarterback)?
If Quinn can lead a turnaround, he could be a strong contender for NFL Coach of the Year. It’s an award that eluded Quinn before, including during Atlanta’s Super Bowl run.
