The Chiefs, Saints may sign the top remaining tight end free agent, Logan Thomas after the NFL trade deadline. Just because no teams can’t trade anymore doesn’t mean they can’t make adjustable moves, especially for those who are contenders this season. Originally selected in the 2014 NFL Draft, the veteran started his career as a reserve quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals but found more success being a tight end in 2016. Thomas may not be a superstar in this league but he’s easily viable for a depth role for any team that needs it.
He had one of his best seasons coming from the Washington Commanders, recording 55 catches for 496 receiving yards and four touchdowns. However, the team couldn’t compensate him a new contract so he is yet to find a new home despite signing a new deal with the San Francisco 49ers. He was going to be the man behind star tight end George Kittle but the 49ers didn’t bother keeping him leading to his release before the regular season. Even though he isn’t a starter anymore, it doesn’t mean he won’t provide value for a roster.
There are plenty of teams out there that are always looking to build upon what they already have. The Chiefs, Saints may bring out the best in him despite him entering an aging era where his production may slow down. These teams won’t have that issue since they’ll soon look towards the NFL Free Agency to see who’s the best available for their passing attack.

Help for Travis Kelce
Patrick Mahomes is one of the greatest quarterbacks in the world, but this is probably his worst season this year despite winning two back-to-back Super Bowls for the franchise. However, Travis Kelce got off to a slow start but thanks to trading for DeAndre Hopkins, he began finding his rhythm in the offensive attack. They’ve brought in Peyton Hendershot in a trade from the Dallas Cowboys and were interested in drafting a new tight end to help Kelce since they’ve realized he only has so much to offer. There were rumors that Kelce could retire soon but he denied them and said he has plenty of years to go if he sustains an injury, he may have to start thinking about it since he already has two rings in possession.
Kelce doesn’t need to be a full-time starter anymore in two years and the Chiefs realize that. They can’t depend on him forever so rolling the dice on someone like Logan Thomas may boost his production. It could help create separation in the opposing team’s secondary so Kelce could get open. Mahomes is great but it makes his life easier if he can find Kelce open as a reliable security blanket.
The New Regime
The New Orleans Saints may anticipate themselves in a rebuilding year next offseason despite saying they’re not as they won’t fire General Manager Mickey Loomis. With Dennis Allen gone, the Saints have no other choice but to begin their regime after brutal losses that didn’t involve teams in matchups. The Saints lost seven straight games after going on a promising 2-0 start. Derek Carr is on the hot seat so there is no reason they bring him back next year on a new contract after missing a few games.
The team may have to build around rookie Spencer Rattler who got the first taste of the league. He may not have succeeded but the Saints could play him more to get him more in rhythm. The tight end position is just one of the many issues along with losing Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed in one season. However, the Saints could take a gamble on Logan Thomas to help provide some insurance behind Juwan Johnson.
