The Washington Commanders turn 90 years old in 2022. Well, the Commanders do not turn 90 years old, but the Washington NFL franchise will turn 90 in the 2022 season.
How will the Commanders celebrate 90 years?
Beginning July 9, the Commanders will celebrate the franchise’s monumental birthday and continue celebrating throughout the upcoming season. The Washington franchise started back in 1932 as the Boston Braves. In 1937, the franchise relocated to Washington, D.C., where it became the Washington Redskins.
In 2020, the franchise initially changed its name to the Washington Football Team before becoming the Commanders on Feb. 2, 2022.
How will Washington commemorate the historic season?
On July 9, the team will unveil a 90th-anniversary patch on all Commanders’ social media channels. The team will wear the patch on the front chest of their jerseys in 2022. The team will also sell 90th-anniversary memorabilia beginning in August and throughout the season.
Washington will also unveil a website called “Command Legacy,” celebrating some of the franchise’s most historical moments. Additionally, fans will have the opportunity to help determine which 10 players will be added to the “80 Greatest” players list in Washington history.
There are multiple other celebrations planned where the team will use its social media channels to engage fans.
It’s a big year for the Commanders, who are debuting a new name, identity and uniforms and celebrating 90 years. Throughout the years, people have been critical of Washington’s efforts to engage fans, but that can’t be said for the current regime under team president Jason Wright.
The one thing fans want most from the organization is to win. The 2022 season would be an ideal time for the Commanders to win 10 or more games.
