There were a lot of high-profile firings and hirings after the 2021 college football season. But one head coach coming off two pedestrian seasons might be among the first to go in 2022.
Appearing on CBS Sports HQ, college analyst Danny Kanell suggested that Florida State head coach Mike Norvell is on the hot seat. He said that while he likes Norvell, the FSU head coach needs to start winning with the roster he’s assembled.
“It’s a massive year for Mike Norvell,” Kanell said. “I mentioned the temperature. I think he’s on the hot seat, and that’s just the expectations that are there after a five win season. The excuses have been there and I like Mike Norvell. I like his energy. I like his vision, but bottom line (it’s a) business. Now you have to start seeing a return on the field, but with some of the players that he’s got in place, building a roster through transfers and pretty strong recruiting classes, I am excited for the season and what it holds for Florida State.”
Kanell expressed optimism that Norvell will weather the storm though. He praised Norvell for how he assembled his roster ahead of the 2022 season.

Mike Norvell was hired in 2020 following several wildly successful seasons with the Memphis Tigers. But success in the American Athletic Conference has yet to follow him to the ACC.
Novell is just 8-13 in two seasons with the Seminoles. He went 3-6 in his first year and 5-7 last year. The Seminoles fired Willie Taggart despite having a better record through 22 games than Norvell did.
Suffice it to say, Norvell might not have much time left if he doesn’t have Florida State back in bowl contention.
Will Mike Norvell be safe in 2022?
