The topic of Matthew Stafford’s Hall of Fame candidacy has been a popular one following the Rams’ win in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday.
Winning a Super Bowl ring certainly boosts Stafford’s eventual Hall of Fame case, but some people, like FS1’s Colin Cowherd, think he still needs to add more to his resume to be worthy of enshrinement.
On “The Herd” today, Cowherd outlined his reasons for saying Stafford isn’t Hall-worthy yet, but added that he still could and possibly should get there if he continues on the track he’s started in LA.
“He doesn’t have an MVP. He’s got a losing record. He’s got one Pro Bowl. There are benchmarks you’ve got to hit, and right now, he’s not a Hall of Fame player,” Cowherd said. “But he’s 34 and he’s got a long runway.”
Matthew Stafford is not a Hall of Famer…yet.

In addition to his Super Bowl trophy, Cowherd cited Stafford’s career performance in the clutch and volume stats as traits that could sway voters down the road.
“In the end, if you’re on the fence with Matt Stafford, the thing that could push him over the top is, look at how many times he came from behind to win, In Detroit. With their nonsense,” Cowherd said.
As Cowherd also hinted at, voters may give Stafford extra leeway for having to play for the Lions for the first decade-plus of his career. It all remains to be seen.
We’ve probably got a few more years before we have to worry about this though, as Stafford doesn’t appear close to retirement.
