Clinton Portis is the latest former great NFL player to try his hand at coaching. According to the Delaware State football Instagram page, Portis is the school’s new running backs coach and run game coordinator.
It’s the first coaching job for Portis, a nine-year NFL veteran who spent seven of his nine seasons in Washington. Portis is second only to John Riggins for the most all-time rushing yards in franchise history, finishing his career in Washington with 6,824 rushing yards and 46 touchdowns. For his career, Portis rushed for 9,923 yards and 75 touchdowns.
Why Delaware State? Portis was hired by former Washington wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who shocked everyone in December after being named Delaware State’s head coach. While Jackson and Portis didn’t play together in Washington, their NFL careers overlapped.
Since his retirement, Portis has worked with the Commanders for some of their preseason coverage and often visits for games.
In addition to Jackson and Portis at Delaware State, legendary former NFL quarterback Michael Vick was named head coach at Norfolk State in December.
Congratulations to Portis on his new endeavor.
