Last week, we learned that one of the greatest running backs in Washington franchise history was getting into coaching. Clinton Portis agreed to become DeSean Jackson’s new running backs coach at Delaware State.
It is Portis’ first coaching job.
On Monday, Portis’ longtime backup with the Redskins, Ladell Betts, reportedly accepted his first NFL coaching job, becoming the New York Giants running backs coach.
The Giants are hiring Ladell Betts as their RB coach, per sources. Betts had been the Iowa RB coach since 2021. He played in the NFL from 2002-10 for Washington and New Orleans.

Betts, a Washington second-round pick in the 2002 NFL draft, spent eight of his nine seasons with the Redskins. He served as Portis’ primary backup for six seasons, enjoying a breakout 2006 campaign when Portis was injured. He played for the New Orleans Saints in 2010 before retiring.
In 2013, Betts began his coaching career. After eight seasons as a high school coach, Betts took over as the running backs coach at his alma mater, Iowa, in 2021.
Betts will replace Joel Thomas as New York’s running backs coach. Betts reunited with Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., who he coached in 2021 with the Hawkeyes. Tracy was one of the NFL’s most pleasant rookie surprises in 2024, rushing for 839 yards and five touchdowns.
